Mesothelioma is a type of cancer typically caused by exposure to asbestos. The cancer can take many years to become evident and once it is present, it can be difficult to detect. Patients who receive treatment for mesothelioma in the early stages have a better prognosis, but survival rates are low. The health and age of the patient also affect the prognosis.

Mesothelioma treatment fall into two primary categories, curative and palliative. Curative treatment is aimed at curing a patient's mesothelioma by removing or killing the cancer cells in the affected area. Palliative treatments are done merely to reduce a patient's pain and discomfort and improve their quality of life.

There are several different mesothelioma treatment methods. Surgery can be performed. The most common type for patients with pleural mesothelioma is a pleurectomy/ decortication procedure. This surgery involves removal of the lining of the chest where the cancer is contained.

A less common type of surgery performed in pericardial mesothelioma is an extrapleural pneumonectomy. The procedure involves the removal of the lung, the lining of the inside chest wall, the pericardium, and the hemi-diaphragm. The goal of the surgeries is to reduce the size of the cancerous tumors. This helps extending the patient's life.

For patients in the earlier stages of mesothelioma, radiation treatments can be performed. Radiation is often performed following surgery to kill additional cancer cells. The entire hemi thorax is treated with radiation. Radiation therapy is also commonly performed to the sites of the chest drain insertion. This prevents the growth of the tumor along the patient's chest wall. Radiation therapy can also serve the palliative purpose of relieving the symptoms from tumor growth.

Chemotherapy has been an effective form of treatment for patients with mesothelioma. It is often performed in addition to radiation therapy. On a statistical basis, studies have shown that patients receiving chemotherapy extend their lives by several months in comparison to those who do not receive the treatment.

Living Life Six Months at a Time

I recently found myself in the Carbone cancer center at the University of Wisconsin once again. It had been six months since I was last there. Six months since my last CT scan. Six months since I sat in the small examining room awaiting the arrival of my oncologist to review my scan with me and talk about where I've been and where I'm at and most importantly, where I am going. I was truly nervous. This is my first six-month review. Prior to this I was being seen every three months before that every month and prior to that every day.

Six months does not seem like a long time if it is put into the perspective of a normal lifetime. If you happen to be me, a current lung cancer survivor, six months represents the longest time you've gone without medical supervision for the past three years.

When I was first told that I did not have to return for six months, I was very excited. The things I could do in six uninterrupted months would be wonderful. I must tell you that the first three months were just that, I was at the peak of my limited energy. I was writing and speaking with potential sponsors and donors. I met with and spoke with company executives regarding cancer products and research. I spoke with cancer patients and gave support. For three months I was on top of my game. Then somewhere in that stretch it dawned on me that three months had passed and my internal cancer clock went off. I started thinking about things far too much. I started to question the six months I was given and began to worry about the additional three-month grace period.

As soon as concerns and doubts began to creep into my thoughts, my mood began to change, my productivity dropped and I started to withdraw from things, I was not a pleasant person to be around and I didn't see it at all. My family did, what was invisible to me was crystal clear to them. Our non-profit organization (GFLCCO) also suffered as I withdrew from writing for a while and stopped aggressively trying to get our message out. For the next couple of months, I was a mess.

It was soon May and my pre-exam paranoia was at full height. My wife and son had sat down with me and pointed out my personality change and although I couldn't understand it at first the more I thought about it the more I realized I had traveled this path before.

My wife and I soon found ourselves on a plane and in Chicago. A few days later I found myself sitting in the all too familiar waiting room at the UW and then waiting in the examining room once more.

I had written about similar things many months earlier and finally refined and published it as an article in December of last year. The article is entitled, "Living Life Three Months At A Time." I re read it, which by the way if you haven't read it I suggest you do because this is obviously the second in the series and I wouldn't want you to fall behind the other people who have done their homework.

Although I went through treatment over three years ago, I still consider myself as a current small cell lung cancer survivor. I am ever mindful that cancer is a tricky thing and sometimes like a bad horror movie sequel, it comes back to stalk the survivor of the original film. I think that fact is still the haunting factor of the follow up visit whether it be three or six months. It's the thought that someone is going to have to look you in the eyes and tell you that you are going to go through it all over again. That thought lurks in the back of my mind more then I care to admit. I feel good for the most part. I still can only walk so far, talk so long, and I still can lose my breath from something as simple as putting on a pair of socks. Walking up a flight of stairs can sometimes take my breath away faster then loves first kiss, but I certainly don't feel like the cancer is flaring up. Of course, three years ago, the news that I had cancer to begin with floored me because what I thought was my yearly bout of bronchitis or possible pneumonia turned out to be lung cancer. After that shock, I came to the UW where they went in through my nose to take a sample from my lung and came back with the verdict of "small cell" lung cancer. I was pretty excited, I remember saying with complete sincerity, "Small cell, that's good isn't it?" "I mean it could be ' Large cell' that would be bad, right?" The room went silent. The difference between large and small cell cancer was explained to me along with the knowledge that operating would not be an option.

I rarely replay the series of events that led to the discovery, diagnosis and treatment of "my" cancer.

My cancer.

As I looked around the waiting room I saw an older gentleman sitting alone and a memory of three years prior flooded in.

I was speaking with a gentleman I met in the same waiting room that I was currently seated in the spring of 2007, shortly after I began treatment. He was older then I but because we were going through something similar, we had common ground to have a comfortable conversation regarding cancer. He referred to his cancer as "my" cancer. I asked why he would make it that personal? His reply is timeless. He said, "Son, it don't get more personal then cancer." It was his second go round with cancer so he had wisdom to share, he told me," You're cancer is a new part of your life. You've got to get to know it, get personal with it, find it's weakness, then fight it to the death." I was brought back to the present as an elderly woman wearing a breathing apparatus made her way past where I was seated and gently nudged my chair as she passed.

I thought about these things I learned from my friend three years ago and many other things that I have learned along the way, and for the first time in a month began to feel at ease, I found peace of mind.

I watched the people come and go, studying their faces as they spoke to one another. I tried to read their eyes to look into their soles and offer some type of reassurance that I have no right to offer. I kept waiting for the little plastic messenger that the clinic uses which, by the way, is the same one that you would be handed while your waiting for your table at a restaurant. You know the one I mean, the round one that vibrates and then the little red lights light up. I remember thinking once that maybe when this thing lit up, someone would come out of the back with a pizza and I would pay him or her and go home. It never happened. So many people coming and going, so many lives altered by cancer.

I waited as long as I could, but I needed my blood work done before I went for my scan. So as much as I didn't want too, I rose to my feet and walked into the lab to have blood drawn.

As much as I have already twisted and turned in this article, I must once again head into another direction for a moment, please bare with me.

I have both written and spoken about this before, including the "Three Months" article. More then almost anything else in the world, more then clowns, more then spiders. More then clowns posing as spiders or visa/versa. I hate the thought of someone trying to draw blood from me. Let me make sure you understand me here. I do not have a fear of needles. I do not have any reaction to seeing or the thought of blood. My cancer treatment consisted of radiation twice a day combined with three consecutive days of chemotherapy every three weeks and constant blood work. By the end, and to this day, I have very few options to offer as far as veins in my arms, which makes for an interesting and sometimes painful trip to the lab. I am what is referred to as a 'hard stick'. All right, put all the schoolboy jokes aside because it's not funny, and I will tell on you. The one saving grace is that the lab staff at the UW is top notch and even when my veins do not want to cooperate, they make it all bearable. Still the thought of blood being drawn keeps me up at night. What someone who has not been through something like this must be thinking. I mean it really is comical if you think about it. To go through all of this and the biggest concern is that someone is going to struggle a little putting a needle in your arm.

With the blood being drawn and on its way to be analyzed, it was time to move upstairs to the CT area.

The CT waiting room, not the main one you start out in with pizza messenger in hand waiting for the little red lights to signal your acceptance into the inner sanctum. The second one. It's a small quaint waiting room that you wait in with others just before your scan. The nurse asks things about your allergies, if you've had another scan recently and if you have a port left in your arm from your earlier trip to the lab. This is the second hurdle I must clear to vanquish my anxiety. The nurse will test the port to make sure that it is suitable for the contrast that is injected into you during the scan. If the port is no good, then it must be removed and the vein hunt begins again. My port was good this time around, I've not always been this fortunate.

Anyway, the CT waiting room can be a social gathering as we share "why were here today stories" over cups of barium and outdated magazines. I always meet the most wonderful people and sometimes have heard the most heartbreaking stories in this tiny waiting room on the third floor. I have never shared any of these CT waiting room stories with anyone, I think it would be a violation of trust somehow. I will tell you that I have learned, drawn strength from and always taken away something from my years of visiting the third floor. The scan itself is a breeze.

Back we go to the second floor waiting room to see my oncologist, the man who along with the efforts of my radiologist and first and foremost my wife, are responsible for me still hanging around. We met as we always do, exchanged pleasantries, caught up with what we each had been doing over the past six months, a brief check of thing to make sure my basic parts were still functioning. Then the moment we have all been waiting for, the review of my scan.

There I am up on the screen, the Dr. points out where the 10cm tumor started in my right lung, how it had attached itself to my esophagus. He shows where it currently lies much smaller and lying inactive at the moment. The unknown being if it's dead or simply sleeping as a small survivor in its own right. We look at the deterioration at the top of the lung then move to the left lung. He points out the line across the scan which signifies the place where a fine surgeon in Mauston, WI. removed a large portion of my 'good' lung and glued and stapled the remainder together after both lungs collapsed at the same time landing me in the hospital for a month in 2008. We talk about the fact that there has been no significant change in my condition for the past six months and he tells me that my next appointment will also be six months from now. Time freezes for a moment.....It restarts after I have reset my life clock for another six months. It starts after I do the math to see where that puts me in time. Another six months. Set and mark, and once again time begins to move forward with a fresh set of months in front of me like a fresh set of downs must look to the football quarterback of a struggling team. I thank him for all he's done for my wife and I, we shake hands and Lindsy and I leave the small room and schedule our next appearance.

Just like that, it's over. I'm on my own for another six months barring anything unforeseen. I feel great, once again revitalized by the gift of another six months. I want to write, to get back to seeking sponsors and rooting out donations for the GFLCCO. My time in the waiting rooms reminded me that there are many people out there who are at the beginning of treatments or are watching someone they love go through treatments and that they are the people that my wife and I set out to help when we formed our non-profit. So many people coming and going, so many lives altered by cancer.

I am once again an active participant in the world around me, I remember when I was going through treatment and I began thinking and looking at things differently then I once had. I remember again why I started viewing things in a new light. I am ready to once again continue traveling down my new path.

The transition from three-month visits to six-month visits had by far a greater effect on me then I anticipated. As things go, I spend my life now learning new things not only about myself but about the world around me. Hopefully I learned enough to deal a little better with the next six months and hopefully the six after that.

The lesson learned here is one that was simply forgotten. Life in itself is too easily taken for granite and one needs to be reminded of that fact from time to time or you can easily step off your path and get lost in the woods around you. Make the most of the life you have.

Never spend more time focusing on the inevitable destination then you do enjoying the journey.
I would hate to think that I or anyone else for that matter would fight that hard to live and be fortunate enough to survive only to spend their remaining time worrying about a reoccurence. Besides, this set of articles is a trilogy and I would be remiss if I left the earth prior to writing part three, "Living Life One Year At A Time."

Until then, I'm still basically the same as every other person on the face of the planet, trying to stumble their way through life.

I just now do it six months at a time.

Classification of Lung Cancer

Most lung cancers are termed "carcinomas", which are tumors caused by uncontrolled reproduction of epithelial cells; these are the cells which form the linings and surfaces of most of the bodies organs and internal structures. There are two main types of carcinoma which are classified according to the size and presentation of the cancerous cells.

After a biopsy has been taken (which removes part of the tissue suspected to be cancerous), a laboratory specialist, known as a "histopathologist", places the biopsy sample under a microscope and is able to determine whether cancer is present and whether it is non-small cell or small cell cancer. The former accounts for the bulk of lung cancers (80%) but whatever classification is accorded, it is important because different treatment regimes are more effective at treating the different types (note that there are other classifications but these two are the major ones).

Non-small cell lung cancers (NSCLC) are themselves further classified into three different types though the treatment therapies are very similar for all of them:

Squamous cell lung carcinoma;

Adenocarcinoma; and

Large cell lung carcinoma.

Squamous cell cancer of the lung occurs in around a quarter of all lung cancer patients and is usually located near the central bronchus, this is the main airway leading into the lungs themselves. Fortunately, these types of cancer are less aggressive and grow slowly.

Adenocarcinoma occurs in approximately 40% of patients and starts in the outer lung tissue and is most closely associated with smoking, though many non-smokers also present this form of the disease. Whether a patient is male or female and whether they have smoked or not will determine different treatment paths for them under this category.

Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is much less common and usually presents itself in the larger airways (the "bronchi"), but while less common they are unfortunately, much more aggressive. While this form lends itself to treatment by chemotherapy or radiation treatment, however, in many patients by the time it has been diagnosed the cancer has frequently spread (or "metastasized") to other parts of the body. The prognosis for SCLC is usually quite poor and is the type of lung cancer which is most commonly associated with smoking.

No matter what type of cancer a patient presents, it is vital that it is diagnosed as soon as is possible in order to maximize the chances of a positive outcome. Diagnosis and classification of the type of cancer is the first stage in the process of delivering effective treatment for patients, and as quickly as lung cancer has been diagnosed, it must then be "staged". Staging is the process by which the degree of spread and size of a cancer has gotten to; there are four stages, I through IV, with stage I being the best assessment and IV the worst. Staging is important because it directly impacts upon the treatment regime which must be delivered as well as classification of the cancer type.

Basic Information on Lung Cancer Surgery

Early stage lung cancer (Stage I & II) is usually treated by surgical intervention and a combination of chemotherapy and radiation treatment. Stage II cancer may treated by surgery in certain instances, though generally later stage cancer is treated by chemotherapy alone or by combination of chemotherapy and radiation treatment - it is possible for tumors to be shrunk in size so a re-staging of the patient is warranted and surgery becomes a viable option.

The process of removing the cancer tumor is known as "resection", or the cutting away of the cancer mass and suspected diseased tissue. There are a variety of surgical options available but the standard techniques are:

Thoracotomy - an incision is made through the chest wall; and

Median Sternotomy -where the surgeon cuts through the breastbone to access the chest cavity and the lungs.

As both of these techniques involve considerable recovery periods and pain for the patient, alternatives have been devised to provide access to lung cancer tumors and allow for less discomfort for the patient;

Anterior Limited Thoracotomy - known as "ALT" is performed on the front of the chest and involves a much smaller incision than thoracotomy or median sternotomy;

Anterioraxilary Thoracotomy - known as "AAT" involves an incision on the front of the chest close to the underarm; and

Posterolateral Thoracotomy - known as"PLT" involves an incision through the back or side of the chest area of the patient.

ALT in particular provides a less invasive option than a standard thoracotomy, and certainly results in reduced blood loss for the patient with a much reduced recuperation period and pain.

Video-Assisted Thoracoscopy or Video-Assisted Thoracic Surgery (VATS)

VATS is a state-of-the-art surgical technique which allows for resection of tumors without the need for invasive, full-surgery. A video camera allows the surgeon to see the interior of the patient's chest and the location of cancer tumors using a high-powered television screen. This provides a skilled surgeon with the ability to operate without actually opening up the patient and involves a much smaller set of incisions.

As the incisions and surgical-invasion is significantly reduced, the patient experiences far less pain and enjoys a much reduced recuperation period post-operation. The technique is not universally employed for two main reasons - firstly, the level of surgical skill required is very high and only highly skilled surgeons can utilize the technique successfully. In addition, as the surgeon is not provided with a full view of the area where the diseased tissue is located, it is possible to miss other cancer tumors or evidence of diseased tissue which a standard operation may uncover.

VATS is usually most appropriate for early stage lung cancer where there is no evidence that the disease has metastasized to other parts of the body or lungs themselves.

The Use of Other Therapies

Depending on the nature of the disease and the overall health of the patient, it is common for patients to undergo treatment pre and post-operation with chemotherapy and radiation treatment. In certain instances, where surgery is not advisable, a patient may undergo such alternative therapies in combination or as stand-alone treatments, but the exact treatment regime which is advised for a patient depends on individual circumstances and the findings of the oncology team providing treatment.

Treating Lung Cancer at Different Stages

Lung cancer is classified by the type of tumor and the stage which the disease has progressed to, which is important because the classification determines the treatment regime which will be followed.

There are four stages of cancer - Stage I to IV and a catch-all category, Occult (which describes those cancers which are known to be present but cannot be seen using diagnostic tools).

The earliest, and least dangerous cancers are Stage I progressing to stage IV which represents very serious danger to the patient's life and the last stage of the disease.

Stage I & II Treatment Regimes

The main form of treatment is surgery and the removal (or "resection") of the cancer tumor.

It is common for additional treatment to be administered in the form of radiation treatment to follow up the surgery. Where a patient is unable to withstand surgical intervention due to their state of health, then radiation therapy alone may be used to destroy the tumor tissue.

Stage III Treatment Regimes

Physicians usually further classify Stage III patients into three further sub-groups:

1. Patients with obvious Stage III disease with abnormally large lymph nodes presenting on X-Ray or CT Scan;

2. Patients with normal looking lymph nodes but still cancerous; and

3. Classic Stage 3b patients with tumors of any size and presenting diseased lymph nodes.

Patients in group 1 probably have cancer in the enlarged lymph nodes and surgery is not likely to benefit them in this instance. A combination of chemotherapy and radiation treatment may benefit them more than any surgery. Treatment is usually done concurrently rather one after the other, as this produces a better response from patients but side effects are worse for patients.

Patients in group 2 may benefit from surgical resection but where the nodes are in fact cancerous, treatment as group 1 may be followed before any surgical intervention to remove visible tumors.

Patients in group 3 are not likely to receive surgery in any event and will be advised to follow a combination therapy as per group 1 if they have noncancerous effusion (fluid which is free of cancer cells). Chemotherapy

Both therapies may cause a loss in appetite, changes in how your sense of taste and heart issues as well as nausea and vomiting. We have already noted that radiation treatment may be used to shrink a tumor so it may be removed, but they also are used to tackle cancers which do not lend themselves to surgery in the first instance. Small Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC) is usually inoperable and is treated by these joint therapies while operable lung cancers use these treatments both before and after surgery to ensure that any cells which have not been removed by surgery are killed off to prevent recurrence of the condition.

The examination may involve the taking of a swab from these areas or a biopsy (the removal of a tissue sample);

Needle Biopsy - a physician inserts a needle using the results of a CT Scan to guide where the needle, so a sample of tissue may be removed from the mass which has been detected; the tissue samples obtained are then "smeared" on a microscope slide and examined by a histopathologist to detect whether the cells are cancerous; and

Bone Scan - this test may be undertaken to check whether any cancer cells have spread (known as "metastasized") to the bones from the original tumor.

A technological advancement is the CT/PET fusion imaging scan - this diagnostic tool uses an injected sugar solution which contains a radioactive element to highlight any cancerous mass. Cancer tumors are very fast growing and use a lot of energy so they rapidly absorb the sugar solution which is accumulates around and within the tumor. When a scan is then performed, the concentration of the radioactive sugar is detected and provides the location and detail of the cancer tumor. It should be borne in mind that there are other tissues which will cause the sugar solution to accumulate such as a bacterial infection, so even this test is not conclusive.

Once lung cancer has been diagnosed, the team of oncology physicians treating the patient will review the results to assess the treatment options for the lung cancer and to check whether any spread of the disease has occurred to other parts of the body. Where it is found the disease has not spread to other parts of the body, then a surgical inspection may take place to assess the disease in detail around the lungs, heart, windpipe and tissues of the chest. In addition, extensive blood tests will take place to look for cancer "markers" which are usually proteins that are associated with the development of lung cancer.

6. Cancer vaccines expose the body to weak of killed versions of the organism that causes the disease, and stimulate an immune response to protect from future disease. Carpenters at Greatest Risk of Asbestos Related Cancer

If ever a reminder was needed of the damaging impact exposure to asbestos has had on industrial workers in the UK, it came in the form of new research published in the British Journal of Cancer recently. Funded by Cancer Research UK and the Health and Safety Executive, the largest global study of its kind into the affects of asbestos exposure found that in some professions, such as carpentry, up to 1 in 10 workers could be expected to develop asbestos related cancers, such as lung cancer or mesothelioma.

The study interviewed more than 2000 people born in the 'baby boomer' generation in the 1940's to determine the rates of asbestos-related disease in various professions. For those who worked as carpenters for more than 10 years before they were 30, the researchers calculated that the risk of developing mesothelioma over their lifetimes was about 1 in 17. When the likelihood of developing lung cancer caused by asbestos was added in, the overall risk to this group of developing some form of asbestos related cancer was 1 in 10.

It was not just carpenters in this age range who had an elevated risk of mesothelioma and lung cancer, the risk for plumbers, electricians and decorators was also well above the rate for the rest of the population. Perhaps one of the most worrying findings of the study was that during the post war period, around two thirds of men and a quarter of women had worked at some point in a job where there was a potential for them to be exposed to asbestos dust.

Speaking about the findings of the study, the lead researcher, Professor Julian Peto, who is based at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, said: "The UK has the highest death rate from mesothelioma in the world. The risk is highest in people who were exposed to asbestos before age 30. By getting some information on all the jobs people had ever done we have shown that the risk in some occupations, particularly the building industry, is higher than we previously thought. New regulations introduced in 1970 reduced exposure to asbestos in factories but heavy exposure to the much larger workforce in construction and various other industries continued."

As the press release from the Health and Safety Executive announced, there are currently around 2100 new diagnosis of mesothelioma each year in the UK, with around 5 times as many cases in men as in women. This number is expected to rise in the next few years, as cancers such as mesothelioma often take many decades to develop. Government compensation schemes have been set up so that those affected by exposure to asbestos who go on to develop cancer will receive some financial assistance, although in many cases by the time these claims are processed, the sufferers have already succumbed to the cancers.

All three of the basic approaches to treating mesothelioma; surgery, radiation therapy, and chemogtherapy, are potentially frightening to a patient. Chemotherapy is perhaps a little more difficult to penetrate rationally, and weigh the risks, versus rewards. Certainly, the list of possible side effects is quite intimidating. Mesothelioma, however, is a killer and you must trust your oncologist as he will want to throw everything that he thinks can work at this disease.

If surgery is an option for you, it may be followed by radiation therapy, and/or chemotherapy in order to try to kill the microscopic cancer cells that remain in your body.

Cause

C. Surgery:Surgical treatment is done mainly to debulk (reduce the size of the tumor by cutting of parts of the tumor,) and treatment of intestinal obstruction.

Prognosis of Peritoneal Mesothelioma
The prognosis of peritoneal mesothelioma is dismal with median survival of about 1 year after presentation. Death usually results from progressive bowel obstruction.

Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral with long fibrous crystals. It is these fibres that cause Asbestos's toxicity due to the harm they cause when inhaled into the lungs. Inhalation of Asbestos can cause a number of very serious illnesses such as lung cancer and Pneumoconiosis.

Historically Asbestos has been used for many different purposes. In fact the Greeks nicknamed Asbestos the miracle mineral due to its versatility and ability to withstand extreme heat. Most famously Asbestos was utilised in construction but its uses were far more widespread - the material's heat resistance made it an ideal electrical insulator for wires and cabling for ovens and its strength was appreciated in the weaving of fabrics for clothing and table cloths etc. By the mid 20th century Asbestos was being used everywhere, examples of products utilising Asbestos are as follows: roof tiles, flooring, pipe insulation, ceiling insulation, lawn furniture, cement for fire places, brake pads for vehicles, protective clothing for firemen etc.

Unfortunately the real dangers of Asbestos were not fully understood until recently, by which time a high percentage of buildings, particularly those erected in the late 1800s and early 1900s, already contained a significant amount in their walls and roofs. Before Asbestos's toxicity was brought to light it had been considered an ideal building material - it was known to be highly fire retardant, have high electricity resistance and, most importantly, was easy and cheap to use.

Sadly heavy use of asbestos in years gone by has exposed past generations of construction workers, carpenters and roofers to asbestos and many now suffer lung disease as a result. Asbestos is only hazardous when the fibres become airborne because it is then that they can be inhaled. Once inhaled the fibres cannot be expelled due to their size, so they become lodged in the lung tissue.

Asbestos is now banned, either in whole or in part, in 60 countries worldwide including all of those in the European Union.

Asbestos Regulation

In 1970 the Asbestos industry maintained a voluntary ban on Blue Asbestos (the most harmful type of Asbestos) in its raw form. The ban did not, however, cover products containing the material. This ban was extended to Brown Asbestos (considered the 2nd most dangerous type) in 1980.

It wasn't until 1986 that the UK Government imposed an official ban on the two most harmful forms of Asbestos, and any products that contained them. The official policy was introduced to: "Prohibit the most hazardous forms and activities, namely the importation, supply and use of blue and brown (crocidolite and amosite) asbestos, asbestos spraying and the installation of asbestos insulation, License most work with asbestos insulation or coatings and Strictly control the remaining risks to anyone working with asbestos (and others affected by them)".

In 2006 the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2006 came into force. These new regulations combine the three previous sets of regulations covering the prohibition, control and licensing of Abestos.

The regulations prohibit the importation, supply and use of all three forms of Asbestos - Blue, Brown and white.

Lycopene is present naturally in human plasma in greater amounts than beta carotene and other essential dietary carotenoids. This may indicates its greater biological significance in the human defense system. The researchers in P&S and Harlem Hospital evaluated the association between lung cancer and lycopene.

Investigators collected blood samples from 93 individuals with non-small cell lung cancer and also from 102 matched controls, in a case-control study. They tested tested the samples for levels of certain micronutrients, including retinol, lycopene and beta-carotene.

The researchers found no significant differences between control subjects and subjects with lung cancer. in most of the micronutrients for which they did the tests. But they did find that lung cancer patients had significantly lower concentrations of lycopene.

After adjusting for age, race, sex, drinking, smoking, vitamin supplements, occupational exposure and season, the investigators found that the group with the lowest levels of lycopene, had almost a three-fold increased risk for cancer compared with the group with the highest lycopene levels.

When the investigators evaluated current smokers, they found that the group with the lowest lycopene blood levels had four times the risk of cancer than the group with the highest lycopene levels. According to Dr. Jean G. Ford, assistant professor of medicine and principal investigator:

"We concluded from our findings that low intake of lycopene may be a risk factor for lung cancer, especially for smokers. Even though our findings are preliminary, they add to the growing body of evidence that diets rich in tomatoes and tomato products are strongly linked to a reduced risk of certain types of cancer."

What is Pleural Fibrosis?

Asbestosis is commonly called fibrosis of the lungs. Pleural fibrosis can be seen as somewhat related to asbestosis in that there is evidence that individuals who have developed pleural fibrosis have an increased risk of developing asbestosis or fibrosis of the lungs later on. This is another one of the side effects of exposure to asbestos. It is one of the less deadly side effects but should still be taken seriously.

Asbestos exposure comes in a variety of forms. One way to be exposed to it is at a low level for intermittent or extended periods. The other common way to be exposed the asbestos is through a short period of time but with heavy exposure in that period. This is called amphiboles exposure.

Pleural fibrosis is the name for the condition in which a person will develop fibrous tissue in the pleura (the casing in the chest cavity around the lungs and over the diaphragm or around the heart or around parts of the digestive tract). The fibrous tissues can develop in a small area of the pleura (localized) or be much more widespread. In addition to the variation in how widespread the tissues are, there is also a wide range of variety in the thickness of the fibers. When it is thinner, pleural fibrosis will show up as a slight milky discoloration. When thicker, it can be a thick, white peel that can encase an entire or both lungs in their entirety.

We know that pleural fibrosis is directly related to exposure to asbestos. We know this because clinical examinations of pleural fibrosis have shown that the tissue typically contains at least asbestos fibers. In some cases, the fibers contain asbestos bodies and fibers. The lungs have also been shown to have asbestos fibers and bodies in them.

Like all conditions and diseases tied to exposure to asbestos, pleural fibrosis develops around fifteen years after the short period of heavy exposure to asbestos. The amount of time since the first incidence of exposure is much more important than the cumulative amount of exposure.

Like pleural plaques, pleural fibrosis is frequently diagnosed by accident or chance when a chest x-ray is performed. In light cases, there are frequently no symptoms. In heavier cases, patients have been known to complain of breathlessness, chest pain, or both to their doctor. This does actually reduce the amount of functioning in the lungs but frequently with very few symptoms. This is true even when the chest x-ray which diagnosed the pleural fibrosis indicates that the condition is widespread.

In rare cases, the fibrosis may become so severe and thick that it restricts the patient's ability to breath. When this happens, a pleurectomy is usually performed to remove the afflicted pleura completely.

If the disease is caught quickly enough surgery can help to remove the pleura that are affected and the patient will live for longer than someone with advanced Pleural Mesothelioma. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy are also options that some doctors will use to further extend the life of their patient but this does need to be carefully considered.
