Mesothelioma is one of the rarest kinds of cancer. Every year in the United States, approximately 2,000 cases are diagnosed. The disease is caused because of the exposure to asbestos, with 70 to 80 per cent of all cases.

Asbestos has been used in many products, like cement, brake coatings, flooring products, sheeting for roofs, insulation material and textiles. The particles are usually released during the manufacturing process. People who were exposed to asbestos were not the only people who had danger of mesothelioma but the relatives were also exposed to toxins when they were taken to the house in clothes and hair, making them a high risk of developing mesothelioma.

Eighty percent of cases who suffer from pleural mesothelioma are those who have been exposed to asbestos, but only 10% of those with a known history of heavy exposure develop the disease. This suggests that additional exposure or other factors are involved now to develop the disease. But the bewilderment is the fact that only 50% of people with peritoneal mesothelioma have a history of exposure to asbestos.

What is the mesothelial tissue?
The mesotelio is a protective sac that covers and protects most internal organs of the body. This is composed of two layers, first layer covering the body and second layer forms a sac around it. The mesotelio produces a lubricating fluid that is released between these layers, allowing moving organs (such as the lungs) move more easily. The area between the layers is called the pleural space. The mesothelial tissue is the covering that covers the organs of the abdominal cavity, lungs and heart testicles.

What is Mesothelioma?
Mesothelioma occurs when mesothelial cells grow out of control. These cells also lose the ability to stop the production of lubricating fluid when there is sufficient. This is where the bodies are steep undesirably within a thick rind of tumor tissue and excessive accumulation of fluid, ultimately causing symptoms. These cells can grow and invade other organs, or spread to other areas of the body. When the cells invade other areas of the body, this is called metastasis.

Most of the mestoleliomas are in the coating of the lung (65 to 70%). About 20 to 30% of cases are found in the coating of the abdominal cavity, and even more rarely, mesothelioma is found in the coating of the heart (1 to 2%) or testicles.

Hence the only way to avoid this disease is to not to get exposed to asbestos and also if one is exposed then that person should get the check up done so that the disease can be cured in the early stage.
